Visiting some nice snorkeling spots and islands like Koh Wao (snorkeling), Koh Tay Plaow (kayaking) or Koh Wua Talap (lunch), one of the highlights is the island of Koh Mae Koh. 2. Koh Madsum & Koh Taen
Located south of Koh Samui the islands of Koh Madsum and Koh Taen belong to the Samui archipelago. It is somewhat of an insiders’ tip, because there are not many visitors doing a tour to these two islands. However, to get to Koh Madsum and Koh Taen you can rent a long-tail boat in the fishing village of Thong Krut, situated on the south coast, on your own. It’s also possible to make some snorkeling stops.
The ocean there has plenty of fish to see and with a little bit of luck you can even spot stingrays. The boat ride takes just about 15 minutes. On Koh Madsum you will find a great beach and clear turquoise water overlooking the southern coast of Koh Samui. To hire a long-tail boat you will have to pay around 1200 to 1400 Baht, but the price is of course negotiable. Just head down to Thong Krut and find yourself a boatsman.

3. Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is the second-largest island in the Samui archipelago and just a 30 minutes boat ride from Koh Samui. There are boats starting in Nathon, Maenam or Bangrak to Koh Phangan on a daily basis for about 300 Baht one way. Koh Phangan is quite famous for the monthly Full Moon Party, but there is so much more to explore beyond that party. From remote beaches on the east coast or the adjacent island of Koh Ma at the Mae Haad Beach to waterfalls, hiking spots or sunset bars, the opportunities to explore Phangan are very diverse.
The island offers a lot to fill a day trip, which still gives you only a small first glimpse of Koh Phangan. You can either do a trip like that on your own or book a tour with your hotel or one of the travel agencies on Koh Samui. A day trip with boat and taxi transfers as well as food should cost you at least 1500 Baht per person, but it’s money well spent.
4. Koh Tao
Koh Tao is the third largest inhabited island in the Gulf of Thailand, with large being a bit exaggerated. It is particularly popular for snorkeling and diving, but above all, it offers some of the most stunning beaches in Thailand. You won’t find many classic sights on the island, but it still offers a lot to do and you can be very active. Try Standup Paddling, hike to fantastic viewpoints e.g. the John Suwan Viewpoint, go kayaking, explore the island and the beaches by scooter or enjoy the beautiful sunset on the west coast.
Koh Tao is not as busy as Koh Samui, but you certainly won’t get bored on the island. You can discover Koh Tao on your own by taking a ferry from Koh Samui or visit the island on a day trip in combination with Koh Nang Yuan, as you can read in the next point.

5. Koh Nang Yuan
Koh Nang Yuan is a small island off the coast of Koh Tao. Actually, it even consists of three small islands, Koh Nang Yuan, Koh Nang Yuan Lek and Koh Hang Tao, which are connected by a sandbank. Most guests are visiting the island on a tour in combination with Koh Tao from Koh Samui. Another way to get to the island is by renting a long-tail boat from Koh Tao, if you are staying there. Koh Nang Yuan is really small, but beautiful. A white sandy beach, colorful fish in the water and a fantastic viewpoint are the things that make the island special. Furthermore, there is a restaurant as well as sunbeds and umbrellas to rent for guests on the island.
If you want to stay on Koh Nang Yuan, check out the Nangyuan Island Dive Resort, the only accommodation on the island. On arrival at Koh Nang Yuan, you will have to pay 100 Baht admission fee and plastic bottles are not allowed ashore. A day tour from Koh Samui starts at about 2000 Baht per person including snorkel stops and lunch. Drop us a line to get more information about our Koh Samui trips.
6. Khanom
Ever wanted to see some dolphins? Then you should visit Khanom, one of the hidden Gems on the east coast of Thailand’s mainland. Khanom is quiet, idyllic and has many beautiful beaches that you can often enjoy alone. The small town is still an insiders’ tip and it will probably stay like this for more years to come. There aren’t any organized tours to Khanom yet, but it’s a great place to explore on your own. Just head with the boat from Koh Samui to Donsak and further on with a Taxi to Khanom or via Surat Thani with a bus.
Upon arrival there are a lot of options for accommodations, but never fully booked. Stay for a night or two and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. If you want to see the pink dolphins, the highlight of Khanom, ask some fisherman to take you. They charge around 800 Baht per boat and they are more than happy to show you these beautiful creatures.
7. Khao Sok National Park
The Khao Sok National Park is one of the other highlights off the beaches in the Surat Thani region. It covers an area of 700 km² and is a popular destination for a day trip or an overnight stay. In the middle of the national park lies the 162 km² large Cheow Lan Lake. It is a great place for a boat trip that passes by huge limestone cliffs, especially the three rocks Hin Sam Glur, one of the most famous spots to take a picture. You can also explore waterfalls, spend a night on the lake or explore the wildlife and the diverse flora and fauna. The huge Ratchaprabha dam, built-in 1982, is a beautiful destination and the point of entrance for most visitors. The entrance fee to the National Park is 300 Baht and tour prices start from 2000 Baht per person.
Of course there are more places to see nearby Samui, but not so much considered as day trips. There would be for example Hua Hin, Chumphon or Nakhon Si Thammarat. You can see Koh Samui is not only good to stay at for day trips, but also if you want to travel any further after that. Book now our Koh Samui trips.
