Located south of Koh Samui the islands of Koh Madsum and Koh Taen belong to the Samui archipelago. It is somewhat of an insiders’ tip, because there are not many visitors doing a tour to these two islands. However, to get to Koh Madsum and Koh Taen you can rent a long-tail boat in the fishing village of Thong Krut, situated on the south coast, on your own. It’s also possible to make some snorkeling stops.
The ocean there has plenty of fish to see and with a little bit of luck you can even spot stingrays. The boat ride takes just about 15 minutes. On Koh Madsum you will find a great beach and clear turquoise water overlooking the southern coast of Koh Samui. To hire a long-tail boat you will have to pay around 1200 to 1400 Baht, but the price is of course negotiable. Just head down to Thong Krut and find yourself a boatsman.

Koh Phangan is the second-largest island in the Samui archipelago and just a 30 minutes boat ride from Koh Samui. The island offers a lot to fill a day trip, which still gives you only a small first glimpse of Koh Phangan. You can either do a trip like that on your own or book a tour with your hotel or one of the travel agencies on Koh Samui. A day trip with boat and taxi transfers as well as food should cost you at least 1500 Baht per person, but it’s money well spent.

Koh Tao is the third largest inhabited island in the Gulf of Thailand, with large being a bit exaggerated. It is particularly popular for snorkeling and diving, but above all, it offers some of the most stunning beaches in Thailand. You won’t find many classic sights on the island, but it still offers a lot to do and you can be very active. Try Standup Paddling, hike to fantastic viewpoints e.g. the John Suwan Viewpoint, go kayaking, explore the island and the beaches by scooter or enjoy the beautiful sunset on the west coast.
Koh Tao is not as busy as Koh Samui, but you certainly won’t get bored on the island. You can discover Koh Tao on your own by taking a ferry from Koh Samui or visit the island on a day trip in combination with Koh Nang Yuan, as you can read in the next point.
