1.Secret Place – Wat Teepangkorn

Properties Away Secret Place Wat Teepangkorn

Located at 635 meters on the highest mountain of Koh Samui, the Khao Pom, you can visit the Wat Teepangkorn our first secret place. The temple is still expanding and despite from some 4×4 Jeep tours at most times rarely visited. The highlight of the Wat Teepangkorn is the large golden statue of Buddha, the Phra Buddha Teepangkorn. From the platform of the statue, you will also have a terrific view over the island and especially Lamai in the east.

However, there are a few more temple buildings you can visit on-site. One Building that you can find is a kind of museum extends over 3 floors and on the rooftop, you can catch a very unique 360 panorama view over the island. On a very clear day, you can see straight to Koh Phangan and all the islands around Koh Samui. By the way, the admission fee is 20 THB, but the temple not that easy to find on your own.

The best way up is a road into the middle of the island from Lamai. Driving south you have to take the next street right, after the corner at Wat Lamai. The road leads up the mountain and if you turn left at the end you will reach the Wat Teepangkorn. If you turn right you will end up at the Jungle Route 360 (see the last point).

The Tarnim Magic Garden is also known as the Secret or Magic Buddha Garden and is situated on the Khun Nim Peak, a mountain in the middle of Koh Samui. The entrance to the street that leads on top of the hill is located opposite the Wat Khunaram with the famous mummified monk.

The garden is decorated with countless mystical sculptures like snakes, birds or other creatures. A great place to take some pictures. The entrance fee is 100 Baht per person, which is used to maintain the Tarnim Magic Garden. A secluded highlight that is definitely worth a visit.

Please, keep in mind that all the area was built from an over 70 year’s old guy who has devoted his life for that project. Respect “Taa Nim” Grandfather Nim.

4. Secret Place – Tree Bridge Coffee

properties_away_secret_places_tree_bridge_coffee

Tree Bridge Coffee is a unique cafe tucked away in the jungle of Maenam, a town on Koh Samui’s northern coast. Not so easy to find and that’s mostly the reason why the Tree Bridge Coffee is very quiet and peaceful. To get there you have to take the Maenam Soi 4 opposite the weekly Maenam Walking Street. Follow the road through the temple as it turns right to the Maenam Soi 5. Now you will see some signs from time to time leading the way up in the mountains.

On arrival you can order your coffee or another drink at the small house and cross the suspension bridge to the small platform with tables in the treetops. A while ago this was an abandoned zip lining, which was transformed into that exceptional coffeehouse.

5. Secret Place – Zodiac

Zodiac is one of the newest attractions on Koh Samui and is located high up in the mountains on the way to the Tarnim Magic Garden by simply turning left at the last opportunity before reaching the garden. The complex is well maintained, but is still partially under construction.

On site there are all twelve zodiac signs as statues and a large crab from which you have a fantastic view over the island of Koh Samui. In the near future, there will also be a café, where you can have a drink while enjoying the Zodiac garden. As for now, there are no entrance fees and you will probably be the only one to visit.

6. Secret Place – Samui Adventure (Cable Car & Ride)

Located just below the Lamai Viewpoint, which offers 180-degree view of the coastline, the Samui Adventure is an attraction for adventurous visitors. In addition to the small Siva Tara waterfall, the Funny Fish Spa and the viewpoint, you can experience quite a lot on site. One of the highlights is certainly the first cable car on Koh Samui, which you can take to the viewpoint without the short but sometimes exhausting hike.

Looking for some more adventure? Samui Adventure is also the home of the highest zip line of the island. 80 meters above the treetops you can feel the adrenaline rush through your veins. Definitely, something you won’t forget. Open daily from 8.30 A.M. to 6.30 P.M. A ticket is 100 Baht per person with additional 100 Baht for the cable car ride and 800 Baht for the zip lining.

7. Secret Place – Koh Samui Rum Distillery

properties_away_secret_places_samui_rum_distillery

With the Koh Samui Rum Distillery (formerly known as the Magic Alambic Rum Distillery), the island has its own private rum production. It is run since 2003 by a French couple. The rum is made from sugarcane and many steps of the production have to be carried out by hand. In the end the rum has to mature for about 6 months in large steel tanks.

The final product is then reduced to 40% alcohol, because otherwise the distillery would get some legal issues to sell it. On site you can participate in a rum tasting, if you are interested in that. Each shot of rum will cost you 60 Baht. Also tapas are served or you can order some Thai food, if you get hungry.

A bottle of the Koh Samui rum is a fantastic souvenir for the loved ones at home. The price is about 280 to 380 Baht, depending on the taste and size you choose.

The Dusit Dhewa Cultural Center and Fine Arts of South East Asia is still an insider tip on the island. It was created by Theerachart Samrit, a Thai and is located a little bit south of Koh Samui’s main town Nathon. From the outside the exhibit looks quite impressive, but the interior is even more fascinating.

You can discover lots of sculptures and statues that unite cultures from all over Southeast Asia with elements from Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia. All that makes the garden something special. Open daily from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. it attracts only a few visitors. The entrance fee is 100 baht per person which helps to maintain and expand the Dusit Dhewa Cultural Center.

But the Jungle Route 360 is more than just a restaurant with a fantastic 360 degrees panoramic view over Koh Samui where you can see Lamai, Chaweng, Choeng Mon etc.

Apart from the delicious food, which is served in the restaurant, you can also camp on site and watch the stars at night or see the sunrise over the island. On a good day you even can see the neighboring islands Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and the Ang Thong National Marine Park.

The experience is completed with a great service from the friendly owners. By the way, you can reach the Jungle Route 360 on the same road that leads to the Wat Teepangkorn (see the first point).
