Lamai is situated at the east coast of Koh Samui and is referred to as the second largest tourist hot spot on the island. Lamai offers everything you need to enjoy a relaxing holiday time on Koh Samui. Restaurants, bars, beaches, temples, lots of private unique accommodations and shopping opportunities, Lamai has it all. It is also considered as the kind of quieter sister town of Chaweng, the most vibrant town of Koh Samui. Here are 10 things to do during your stay in Lamai.

1. Explore the Sunday Walking Street

Every Sunday there is the huge Lamai Walking Street, a big market that stretches on two streets. The main one is the Had Lamai Road, which you can access from the ring road of Koh Samui. The stalls open around 5 P.M. until 10 P.M. Just take a walk around the market and it is best if you come hungry, because there are dozens of stalls selling food and drinks. Barbecued squid, fish, pork, chicken, famous dishes like Pad Thai or Satay as well as some Western food like sausages, pizza or sandwiches. There is food for every kind of taste and you will regret it, if you filled up beforehand. But that’s not all. There are more stalls selling souvenirs, crafts, clothes and electric goods. At the end of your visit don’t miss the mobile cocktail bars, which offer cheap but tasteful drinks.

2. Visit Grandmother and Grandfather Rock

The Grandmother and Grandfather Rock, in Thai called Hin Ta and Hin Yai, are some unusual rock formations at the southern end of Lamai Beach. It is one of the most visited and photographed sights on the island likewise popular amongst locals and tourists. According to a local legend a married couple shipwrecked off the coast a long time ago. That’s why the rocks represent the male and female genitals. There is also the belief that a visit at Grandmother and Grandfather Rock increases fertility, which is the reason why many local couples visit the sight, if they decide to have a baby. You can easily find the rock formations which are signposted as Hin Ta and Hin Yai on the ring road of Koh Samui. The visit is free, but you will have to pay a small fee for parking like 10 Baht for scooters and 40 Baht for cars.

3. Have fun in the Coco & Splash Waterpark

Updated on 01.01.2019: the Coco & Splash Waterpark is closed, but there is the amazing Waterpark “Pink Elephant” in Meanam.
If you are looking for something to do with your kids, then don’t miss the Coco & Splash Water park. It is a family attraction, but especially a great experience for kids. The water park is open daily from 10.30 A.M. to 10 P.M. and connected to the O’Plato Restaurant, where you can buy some food and drinks during the day.

4. Enjoy the Lamai Viewpoint

The Lamai Viewpoint is situated behind the Makro market. You can also find it signposted on the ring road with Lamai Viewpoint or Valentine Stone, because the spot is more than just a viewpoint. On site you can also visit the small Siva Tara Waterfall, a Fish Spa and of course the Valentine Stone, that got its name from the shape, which resembles a heart. However, the highlight of this attraction is the Viewpoint with the breathtaking Cable Ride in Lamai. It is located on a small hill and you can reach it easily by walking for about 10 minutes or you can choose to pay for the cable car that will bring you up. Up there is a small café for some refreshments, which you can enjoy with a great view over Lamai and the east coast. The admission for the Lamai Viewpoint, Siva Tara Waterfall, the Fish Spa and the Valentine Stone is 100 Baht per person. Additional costs are 100 Baht for the cable car and 800 Baht for the 400m long zip line. Open daily from 8.30 A.M. to 6.30 P.M.

5. Pay a visit to the Wat Lamai

The Wat Lamai is the main temple of Lamai and located at the ring road just when it turns left on the right hand side (Google maps location). It’s not only a temple, but also a cultural hall where events like weddings or funerals take place. In addition, the temple hosts a folklore museum where you can learn something about the past of Koh Samui and take a look at 2000 years old artifacts. The entrance of the museum is guarded by two large warrior statues, called Yaks. Furthermore, there is a local school on the temple grounds and if you lucky you can also meet some monks and have a chat with them. The visit of the Wat Lamai is free of charge, but a donation is always welcome. A really spiritual place for relaxing or getting to know the history of Koh Samui.

6. Spend a day at the Beach

Lamai Beach is the second largest beach on Koh Samui, but compared to Chaweng Beach it is still calm and relaxed. You can find a couple of restaurants, hotels or bars along the beach. Spend the day in some of the sun beds or in the shade of the palm trees. Lamai Beach is also nice for a swim, because the water isn’t too shallow. Another great beach would be Silver Beach or Thongtakian Beach, which is the Thai name. It is situated a little bit north of Lamai at the Crystal Bay Resort. The Silver Beach is just a short stretch of sand with about 250 meters, but one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. There are some restaurants playing music at the beach, which gives it a beach club feeling. Enjoy the amazing white sand or take a swim for a perfect day at the beach.

7. Have a look at the Lamai Night Plaza

Interested in markets besides the Sunday Walking Street? A stroll around the Lamai Night Plaza is a good alternative. It opens daily around 5 P.M. in the centre of Lamai and offers various stalls with food and other goods like souvenirs, clothes and more. It is also leading up to a plaza full of beer bars and a great start in the evening. Remember, if you buy something at the stalls don’t forget to bargain the prices. There is always some room between called price and what you actually have to pay for it. However, if you don’t want to buy something it’s still a great place to be to enjoy the atmosphere of Thai markets.

8. Discover the Overlap Stone

On a cliff above Lamai you can find the Overlap Stone with a fantastic view of Lamai and the east coast of the island. It is a little bit harder to get there, but it’s worth it. Just about one kilometer south of the Grandmother and Grandfather Rock you can find some signs on the ring road. Since the road up the hill is kind of steep and full of sand it’s best to do it with a 4×4 car or dirt bike, but you can also take a walk for 20 minutes. On top, just right before the Overlap Stone is a small shop, where you can buy some refreshments after the exhausting walk up. Definitely one of the sights, which doesn’t see many visitors.

9. Watch a Muay Thai Fight

Every Saturday the Lamai Boxing Stadium hosts a big fight night, beginning at 9 P.M. The boxing ring is surrounded by beer bars, where you can order your drink and the admission to see those fights is free. It’s very popular to visit a Muay Thai fight amongst tourist as well as locals, at least if you have never seen one before. Usually around 200 or more people are watching the fights. It’s definitely an event you shouldn’t miss in Lamai.

10. Go to see a fire show at the Beach

You can end your exciting day in Lamai with a fire show directly at the beach. A good spot to do that is the Kontiki Bar. There are daily fire shows at 7, 9 and 11 P.M. and also some parties on Monday and Friday. Nevertheless, you can go there every night and have a nice dinner at the beach as well. The food ranges from Thai food to Western dishes like Sandwiches, Burgers and more. Head down to the beach and enjoy the atmosphere for a great ending of your day.
